Instruments examine one case at a time
The indexes on this site compare districts with one another. Each scores districts on a single question and ranks them, which shows where a problem is most severe. An instrument starts instead from a single case, such as one proposal in the environmental clearance register, and gathers what the public record holds about it. It reports that record as it stands, without scoring, weighting or ranking it.
Each figure an instrument shows names the dataset it came from and the year that dataset was collected. Where the record is silent on a question, the instrument says so and leaves the gap unfilled, so a reader can see where the evidence ends as well as what it shows.
Available instruments
Further instruments are planned, each built around another kind of public record and the question that record can answer about a single case.
How current the data is
The socio-economic figures come from Census 2011, the most recent census for which complete sub-district figures exist, and they describe the population as it was counted that year. Census 2027 is under way, with its population count scheduled for February 2027, and none of its figures are published yet. The register, by contrast, is read again every night, and the date of the latest read is shown below.
