This district was carved from Koraput in 1992. C.O. 109 fixes its area by reference to territorial divisions as existing at 31 December 1977, and a district drawn later does not change the ground the Order scheduled. On that date every part of this district lay within Koraput, which the Order names as a whole, so every part of it is a Scheduled Area. The Ministry of Panchayati Raj lists this district among notified Fifth Schedule Areas.
