This district was formed from Warangal in 1953, taking Paloncha taluq, all of whose villages C.O. 26 schedules save those it enumerates; Bhadrachalam taluq, part of the East Godavari Agency that C.O. 9 schedules, was added from East Godavari in 1959. C.O. 26 fixes its area by reference to territorial divisions as existing at 7 December 1950, and a district drawn later does not change the ground the Order scheduled. The Order names part of Warangal, and part of what it names now lies in this district, so district-level status cannot settle whether a particular site is inside it. The Ministry of Panchayati Raj lists this district among notified Fifth Schedule Areas.
