About

Where electricity supply falls short.

The project

Whitespace India Energy is a planned index of gaps in electricity supply and in the move to renewable energy across Indian districts. It will score each district on its supply deficit, on household access and on its distance from renewable targets, using government data from the Central Electricity Authority, the Saubhagya scheme dashboards and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. Until that data is in place, these pages run on placeholder figures.

The aim is to find the districts where investment in electricity would do the most good, with a score that anyone can reproduce from public records.

Planned sources
  • Central Electricity Authority (CEA): state generation and capacity reports
  • Saubhagya dashboard: progress of household electrification
  • Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE): renewable capacity and targets
  • Census of India 2011: district populations
